Validating Optical and Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) through MSA 4th Edition Methods
By Helena Lindt, Principal Metrology Specialist • July 2026
Abstract:
Statistical validation of optical 3D scanners, laser trackers, and touch-probe CMMs per AIAG MSA 4th Edition standards.
1. Metrology in Modern Automotive Manufacturing Automated coordinate measuring machines (CMM) and structured-light optical scanners inspect thousands of body-in-white dimensional points every hour.
2. Gage R&R ANOVA Decomposition This study validates an automated ANOVA-based Gage R&R framework. By isolating equipment repeatability, operator reproducibility, and part-fixture interaction, metrology engineers reduced measurement uncertainty from 14.2% to 6.8%, qualifying inspection fixtures for formal PPAP Level 3 submission.
